ONLY, SINGLE
Only и single, выражающие понятие единственности, не могут взаимозаменяться. Only означает 'единственный' (имеющийся в единственном числе): an only child 'единственный ребенок' (но the only child of his parents), one's only hope 'единственная надежда', the only way out 'единственный выход'. Прилагательное single, также выражающее понятие единственности, не соответствует русскому единственный и не может взаимозаменяться с only. Single означает 'только один, не больше, чем один' (не два, не три и т. д.) и часто употребляется в значении 'непарный', когда речь идет о предметах, выступающих обычно в парном сочетании: single track 'одноколейная железная дорога' (в отличие от двухколейной), single-breasted coat 'однобортный пиджак' (в отличие от двубортного), single ticket 'билет в один конец' (в отличие от return ticket 'билет туда и обратно'), single man 'холостяк' (в отличие от женатого человека). Прилагательное only в этом значении употреблено быть не может.
